When we first started bringing our children to Veysonnaz, we learned quickly that a successful ski holiday isn't just about being near the snow—it’s about having a smart "base camp" strategy.
Now that our kids are older, our apartment’s location directly on the red slope is our greatest asset. But we remember the early years, too. Here is our insider guide to managing a family ski trip in Veysonnaz, from the first "pizza slices" to the first black runs.
1. For the Little Ones: The Piste de l'Ours Base
If your children are absolute beginners or in their first year of ski school, the Piste de l'Ours area is your best friend. Even though our apartment sits right on the piste, we found that when our kids were very small, driving the short distance to the Piste de l'Ours parking was the most stress-free way to start the day.
It’s flat, easy to navigate, and puts you right at the heart of the world-class lift system. Once the kids have had their morning lesson, you’re in the perfect spot for a family lunch at a mountain hut.
2. The "Progression" Milestone
As our children grew (around age 6 or 7, after a few years of ski school), the magic of the apartment really kicked in. There is a huge sense of accomplishment for a child when they can finally "ski home" to their own front door.
Our apartment is located on a red slope—it's exhilarating and beautiful, but it requires a bit of confidence. Being able to skip the afternoon lift lines and ski directly back for a hot chocolate in our living room is a luxury that older kids (and their legs!) truly appreciate.
3. Logistics: The Three-Bathroom Advantage
Regardless of where you ski that day, the "après-ski" routine is the same for every family. Everyone comes home tired, cold, and ready for a shower.
Having three private en-suites was a deliberate choice for us. It means no waiting in line while the kids are cranky. One parent can help the kids in their bathroom while the other gets a head start on a relaxing soak. It turns the 4 PM "chaos hour" into a time of quiet relaxation.
4. Lunch Like a Local
One of our favorite family rituals is visiting Caboulis, the traditional restaurant located just steps from our apartment. It’s the perfect spot for an authentic Valaisan lunch without having to leave the mountain atmosphere. Whether you're skiing past or walking over from the village, it’s a slice of traditional Swiss charm right in our backyard.
5. The "Non-Ski" Afternoon
Sometimes, the best part of a ski holiday is the time spent not skiing. Veysonnaz is the "Balcony of the Alps" for a reason—the views are hypnotic. We love spending afternoons on the terrace, watching the sunset over the Rhone Valley while the kids play games inside. It’s these quiet moments of connection that make the 4 Vallées feel like home.
